Sea Turtles (Marine Turtles)

Have you ever heard of the marine turtle? If your answer is no, how about the Sea turtle? The sea turtle is a very common animal but not a lot of people really know all the facts about them. They live in all different oceans and are found all over the world! They prefer warmer water but are sometimes found in colder areas. They can stay under water for around 4-5 hours. The leather back sea turtle is the largest sea turtle. It can grow up to two meters!! (7 ft) and can way 2,000 pounds! They can also travel up to 22 mph. The largest leather back was 8.5 ft and weighed 2,020 lbs! Diet Sea turtles are omnivores. They eat a variety of different foods but it mostly depends on the subspecies. The normal variety of foods are, jellyfish, seaweed, crabs, shrimp, sponges, snails, algae, and mollusks. Mating and Birth Mating season is March-October (depends on species). When it is time for the female to lay her eggs, she goes on the beach, digs a hole with her back flippers, lays her eggs, and then swims back into the ocean. A bunch of eggs are called a clutch. There can be 70-190 eggs in a clutch! When the mother lays her eggs, she never sees her babies again. It can take up to 1 week for the eggs can hatch. (Most don't make it to adulthood).  When they are all grown up they will return to the same nesting grounds where they were born and lay their eggs there to! Hibernation/Range Sea turtles prefer warmer ares. They are found all over the world. They hibernate to nesting grounds/feeding grounds. They can travel 100 miles to get somewhere!  I got most of my information from livescience.com and defenders.org
